Puri Beach - Orissa
Puri is both a pilgrimage and holiday destination. The vast stretch of sand along the breathtakingly beautiful Bay of Bengal on the coastline of Orissa is one of the finest beaches in India always pulsating with life. The roaring sea is so alluringly blue with frothy white crowns that thousands flock to bathe in the sea or take catamaran cruises. The temple of Lord Jagannath is an added attraction in Puri, as are the craft, culture and cuisine of Orissa.
It has one of the finest beaches. For ages this pious city has been an abode for countless pilgrims who come here to take a purification dip. However, for some years now, Puri has become a special haunt for beach lovers, both Indian and foreign tourists, due to its golden sands and the breathtaking sunrise and sunset.
The shore stretches itself to a long distance and hence is ideal place for lazing around, bathing, swimming or simply viewing the priceless scenery of the advancing waves with their frothy exuberance; shimmering in the sunlight.
Local fishermen, easily distinguishable by their triangular straw hats and dhotis serve as lifeguards on the beach, and take visitors out to sea in their boats to watch the sunsets. On the Chakratirtha side, the long stretch of golden sand is more tranquil and pleasant place to stroll. Take enough precaution while swimming as the currents can be treacherous in Puri.
The beach of Puri is also renowned for the sand sculptures created by the internationally renowned artist, Sudarshan Patnaik. His subjects are generally inspired by sculptures covering the temple walls, characters and episodes from mythology and also from contemporary events.
During the month of November, the beach at Puri comes alive when a beach festival is held for 5 days which showcases the religious and cultural heritage of this fascinating and old city.
