PORT BLAIR
The Cellular Jail, built in 1896 at Port Blair is one of the most dreaded places of pre-Independence India. This jail was infamous throughout the world for the inhuman treatment meted out to its inmates by Jail officials. This monument stands and reflects the tenacity of Indian political prisoners, who had struggled to attain freedom from the shackles of the British rule. Even today, when you walk through the corridors of this monument, you get an eerie feeling.
CORBYN'S COVE
One of the most picturesque sea-beaches, located 4 km from the airport, with long sandy stretches fringed by coconut trees ideal for sea bathing and sun-basking. This beach and the water close to the beach are also perfect location for surfing, scuba diving and boating. Many pill boxes and bunkers established by Japanese add to the attraction of the beach.
CHATHAM ISLAND
Chatham Island is connected to Port Blair by a bridge. It houses one of the
oldest and largest mills in Asia which is a store house of timber like Padauk, Gurjan, Marble, Satin Wood etc.
CHIDIYA TAPU (BIRD'S ISLAND)
Chidiya Tapu or the Bird Isle lies at the southern most tip of South Andaman. It boasts of an enchanting beach, verdant hills and a narrow creek shaded by mangrove trees. The beauty of the place is enhanced by the frolic of fishes in the crytal clear shallow waters studded with corals. It is known for harbouring 46 varieties of endemic birds, white spotted deer and also seasonal orchids.
BARREN ISLAND
Barren Island is one of the most easterly of the Andaman Islands. It is the only confirmed active volcano in South Asia. The Barren Land can be approached by board vessels and one can view the island from the vessel. |
