Anakkara Village - Kerala

Anakkara, the spice destination of Kerala, is one of the four villages selected from Kerala under Endogenous Tourism Project (ETP) by Govt. of India and United Nation’s Development Programme. ETP aims to promote responsible rural tourism by identifying and tapping the potentialities of the selected villages.

A small hamlet that lies at the border of Kerala and Tamilnadu, the topography of the land is unique as it comprises of planes, hills and mountains. At an altitude of 4000 ft. above sea level in the Western Ghats, this small strip of land is blessed with rich scenic beauty and is known for extensive pepper, cardamom, coffee and vanilla plantations. The spices grown in this region are in high demand because of their unique aroma, size, colour and quality.

A lazy walk through the spice plantations, learning a thing or two about farming, experiencing unassuming village hospitality, hitch-hiking a bullock cart, sipping some mature coffee in a village coffee shop, buying your favourite spices, roar, shout in the woods... you’ll find a thousand amusing ways to make your visit memorable.

V.F.T.A., an initiative of the farming community in Anakkara to tap its potential as an upcoming spice destination, showcase its renowned spice heritage to the tourism world, offers excellent opportunities for the discerned tourists to study village farming, savour the local delicacies and flavours of the land, ayurvedic herbs, culture, festivals and art forms, home stay, sightseeing etc.

Walking through the extensive cardamom, pepper, tea and vanilla plantations are a life time experience. Tourists can learn spice processing from the farmers and stay over if it’s what catches their fancy. Visitors can also take Ayurvedic garden visit and learn about aurvedic plants and their curative powers. ‘Black Gold’ as it’s fondly called the world over, pepper is a unique spice. At Anakkara, tourists can watch how it’s cultivated, processed and preserved. One can also visit model pepper farms and study about popular varieties.
